A judicial procedure by which government
officials are accused of wrongdoing and
brought to trial before a legislative body.
In the USA the House of Representatives may
impeach offenders to be tried before the
Senate, as in the case of President Andrew
Johnson 1868. Richard Nixon was forced to
resign the US presidency 1974 following the
threat of impeachment. In England the House
of Commons from 1376 brought ministers and
officers of state to trial before the House
of Lords, for example Bacon 1621, Strafford
1640, and Warren Hastings 1788.
